Location

Melbourne

Connection at The LUME Melbourne is an immersive digital art experience that explores the powerful and universal theme of human connection. Through large-scale projections, interactive installations, and stunning audiovisual elements, visitors are invited to reflect on the ties that bind us, across cultures, landscapes, and experiences. The exhibition seamlessly blends art, technology, and storytelling to create an engaging, multi-sensory journey that resonates on an emotional level. With its innovative use of digital media, Connection encourages audiences to think deeply about how we relate to each other and the world around us.

Acknowledgement of Country & Smoke Ceremony

Honoring Indigenous cultural practices, the Welcome to Country and smoke ceremony experience at Connection was designed to evoke a deep sense of ceremony and reverence for the Wurundjeri people, the traditional custodians of the land where the installation is held. Visitors are greeted by a large faceted LED screen, symbolizing the grand scale of the welcome, immediately immersing them in the cultural significance of the moment. Following the Acknowledgement of Country, they walk through a smoke ceremony installation where LED lighting and smoke projections simulate the cleansing and welcoming smoke traditionally used in such ceremonies. Scenic rocks are arranged to echo Indigenous stone circle formations, further grounding the space in cultural heritage.

At the heart of the installation, an educational touchpoint features native plants used by the Wurundjeri people in smoke ceremonies, with a plaque detailing each species. This element offers visitors not only a sensory experience but also an opportunity to learn about the cultural importance

Emily’s Room

Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s Emily's Room installation transports visitors into a powerful visual narrative of time and connection to Country. In 1994-1995, the esteemed artist painted one canvas each week for an entire year, and in this immersive experience, the original artworks surround the viewer, offering a deep sense of her artistic journey and cultural expression. The mirrored ceiling and floor create an infinity room effect, multiplying the paintings endlessly and making the audience feel completely engulfed within the artwork.

The installation invites visitors to contemplate the passage of time as represented through Emily's vibrant and dynamic canvases. Each piece contributes to a larger, cohesive whole, symbolizing the cycle of seasons and life across an entire year. The infinity effect deepens this experience, reflecting the boundless connection between the land, time, and Emily’s unique perspective. The room is designed to immerse viewers fully in her world, creating a meditative, all-encompassing experience

Mirri Café

Mirri Café offers a sleek and contemporary atmosphere where simple linear motifs are embedded into the design, presented through cut and layered white walls. These clean, geometric elements are highlighted with linear lighting that subtly enhances the space, creating a minimalist yet sophisticated visual experience. The intentional simplicity of the design invites visitors to interpret the space in their own way, allowing for personal reflection while still complementing the thematic ideas present in the surrounding digital content.

This approach creates a harmonious balance between the physical and digital elements of the café, ensuring that the space itself becomes part of the immersive experience without overwhelming the viewer. The design fosters a serene environment, where the modern aesthetic blends seamlessly with the interactive narratives, encouraging visitors to engage with the content in a way that feels fresh, open, and intuitive.

Art Gallery

For the first time at The LUME, an art gallery was introduced to complement the digital content, showcasing original works by artists featured in the immersive gallery. I carefully planned the layout of the space, ensuring a thoughtful arrangement of the artworks, interpretive panels, and thematic elements to enhance the visitor experience. Each artwork was positioned to maintain a cohesive flow, allowing visitors to engage with both the physical pieces and the digital interpretations in a seamless manner.

The interpretive panels provided deeper insights into the artists' creative processes, helping to bridge the gap between the immersive and traditional art forms. The space was designed to be a quiet, reflective environment, where the original works could be appreciated in their own right, while still resonating with the themes of the digital gallery. This integration created a richer, layered experience, allowing visitors to connect with the art on multiple levels.
