Architectural Lighting Design

Location

Auckland

MECCA, Sylvia park was the largest retail project I had worked on to date. We worked closely with the MECCA interior architectural team to design and execute a grid of stretch-fabric panels covering approximately 85% of the ceiling on the ground floor. To compliment this, a more typical downlight arrangement with a custom mirror ceiling feature with integrated track lighting was installed on the floor above.

Lighting Plan

For the Mecca Sylvia Park project, I developed the architectural lighting design, focusing on enhancing the ambiance across both the ground floor and level 1. The lighting plan was carefully crafted to complement the store’s design and functional needs, creating a welcoming environment that aligns with the brand’s luxury aesthetic. Below, you can explore snapshots of the lighting plans for each level, showcasing the balance between form and function.

Lighting Calculations

The two images present architectural lighting modeling calculations for the same area on the ground floor, viewed from different angles. Created in DiaLux, these visuals highlight the precision of the lighting design, ensuring uniform light distribution and enhancing the space's aesthetic appeal. Each angle offers a unique perspective on how the lighting interacts with the architectural elements, emphasizing the balance between functional illumination and visual comfort.

Ground Level Photos

The images showcase the ground floor lighting design, where large areas of the ceiling are covered with stretch fabric panels to create a shadowless daylight effect. This design ensures customers can test products with accurate, even lighting, enhancing their in-store experience. Achieving this effect required meticulous planning to distribute light evenly while complying with New Zealand’s stringent wattage requirements. Careful consideration was given to energy efficiency and sustainability, ensuring the lighting design met both aesthetic and functional goals without exceeding regulatory limits.

Level 1 Photos

The photos of level 1 highlight a more traditional lighting approach, featuring downlights alongside a custom mirror ceiling panel and a curved track light. Since this section is dedicated to fragrance, the lighting design prioritized accent lighting to highlight the products, rather than the even illumination typically required for skin products. The downlights and track lights work together to create a focused and luxurious ambiance, drawing attention to the fragrance displays while the mirror ceiling enhances the sense of space and light reflection, adding to the overall aesthetic.
